Building an ESD Control Program for SMT Lines

SMT lines handle many sensitive devices, often at high speed and across several process stages. A good ESD control program protects components from receiving, kitting, feeder loading, placement, inspection, rework, packing, and storage.

Define the ESD protected area

Mark the EPA clearly and define who can enter, what materials are allowed, and what checks are required. Entry should include personnel grounding verification with products from Personnel Grounding and suitable testers from ESD Instruments.

Control surfaces and tools

Benches, trolleys, trays, racks, feeders, and inspection tables should be part of the ESD plan. Use ESD-safe work surfaces and test them periodically. For measurement, use a surface resistance instrument such as the Digital Surface Resistivity Meter.

Protect parts during movement

Moisture-sensitive and ESD-sensitive components are often damaged during handling between stores and the line. Use appropriate Antistatic Packaging and Conductive Storage so protection continues away from the machine.

Monitor and improve

An SMT ESD program should be documented, trained, measured, and reviewed. Products are only effective when the process around them is consistent.
