Grounding Points for ESD Benches

An ESD bench needs more than a mat and wrist strap. It needs a reliable grounding point that connects the operator, work surface, and accessories to a common reference. Poor grounding points are a common cause of inconsistent ESD protection.

Use a common point connection

A common point keeps the wrist strap and mat connected through the same grounding arrangement. This avoids random wiring and makes inspection easier. The connection should be secure, labelled, and positioned where operators can use it without stretching cords across the bench.

Choose the correct accessories

Marvel Products lists bench and grounding accessories under Miscellaneous Products, including bench mount dual connectors, 3 pin grounding plugs, ESD portable kits, and self adhesive copper tape. These products support the physical side of the grounding system.

Test the complete path

A connector can look fine while the path to ground is broken. Test the mat and surface-to-ground path regularly with a suitable instrument from ESD Instruments. For critical benches, continuous monitoring with the Single Cord Work Station Monitor can detect failures during work.

Avoid common mistakes

  • Do not connect wrist straps to painted metal or unknown screws.
  • Do not allow cords to be shared, stretched, or tied in knots.
  • Do not use damaged snaps or loose banana jacks.
  • Do not skip periodic resistance testing.

A clean grounding layout makes the bench safer, easier to audit, and easier for operators to use correctly.
