What antistatic bags are for
Antistatic bags are designed to reduce static generation during handling. They are useful for items that need protection from tribocharging, which is charge created by contact and separation. They are commonly used for parts, small assemblies, and internal movement where the environment is already controlled.
What static shielding bags add
Static shielding bags provide a barrier against external electrostatic fields. This is important when products are shipped, stored, or handled outside an ESD protected area. A shielding bag is usually the better choice for sensitive PCB assemblies, integrated circuits, memory modules, and customer dispatch.
Simple selection guide
- Use antistatic bags for controlled internal handling where charge generation is the main concern.
- Use static shielding bags when assemblies leave the EPA or may be handled by unknown users.
- Use cushioning such as ESD-safe bubble bags when shock and abrasion are also concerns.
- Never put a sensitive assembly inside ordinary plastic packaging.
